5 STEPS TO PREVENT NAPPY RASH

by WhichNappy.co.uk

Nappy rash is almost inevitable, and you will find it under the nappy at least once during the infancy. It won't make your baby happy, but in the majority of cases the rash is harmless if treated.

Nappy rash is generally the result of urine and stool enzymes rubbing against the skin which causes damage to the top protective layer of skin. If left untreated, it may lead to yeast or other bacteria infections which make usual treatments less effective. This is why (among other reasons) it is worth making an extra effort to prevent nappy rash.

Step 1. Frequent nappy changing

As simple as that - change nappies often, you should typically go through 8-12 nappies a day.

Step 2. Wash Baby's Bottom

Don't just wipe and put a fresh nappy on. Wipes are good but good old-fashioned washing with warm water will help keep the skin clean and healthy. Make sure the skin has been thoroughly air-dried before putting a new nappy on.

Step 3. Right size, correctly fastened!

If the nappies are too tight, friction against the skin will most likely help the irritants like urine inflame the skin. Make sure the nappies are fastened correctly without the clumsy folds and not too tight.

Step 4. Naked Time.

Let your baby enjoy some naked time. It will air out baby's bottom, make the skin stronger and sooth the slight irritation which may not be even visible.

Step 5. Protect and moisturize

Use a soothing or barrier cream to protect skin from urine and stool. Depending on the sensitivity of your baby's skin, some might require daily application, some can do with once a week.

In some situations nappy rash may require special treatment and advice by a dermatologist, but normally if you follow these five simple steps, nappy rash should not bother you or your baby.

Reusable nappies can be made from natural fibers, manmade materials, or a combination of both. They are often made from industrial cotton which may be bleached white or left the fiber’s natural colour.
